GOODYEAR, a trademark, and it is also the inventor in the patent field. Charles Goodyear, He was born on December 29, 1800, in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S., is the inventor of the vulcanization, is a chemical process to improve the quality of the rubber by mixing with sulfur and heated. Goodyear wrote a book about his discovery. The book consists of two volumes and titled Rubber Elasticity and Variations (1853-1855).
his father had a small company that manufactures of iron goods such as hoes, sickles, saws, door hinges, and so forth. At age 21 he became the employee of his father and at the age of 24 years, he married Clarissa Beecher. Of marriage was blessed with seven children Goodyear. But when she was 30 years old, his father's company went bankrupt. The children grew and had no income for certain, goodyear, as head of household, had to borrow money to friends and acquaintances, because I could not pay his debts, he reported to the police and the judges decided to be punished and jailed to pay off debt.
In 1834 at the age of 34 years, Goodyear became interested in rubber. At that time there was a rubber factory that manufactures raincoats and rubber from the rubber hose. But the weather in the U.S. often turn sharply. In the summer it's so tacky rubber, soft, and loses its original shape. In the winter it's rubber so stiff and brittle. Goodyear strives to eliminate the bad qualities of rubber, he mixed rubber with nitric acid or other chemicals. He made experiments of this kind for 3 years but not getting results, he made experiments in prison. Once free he owes more on his
acquaintances to continue his experiments. In 1837, he met Nathaniel M. Hayward (1808-1865), a former rubber factory workers Roxbury. Hayward also made experiments and found that rubber mixed with sulfur is not so sticky in the summer. One day by chance Goodyear dropped the mixture of rubber and sulfur onto a hot stove, he is very surprised because the mixture does not melt. When mixture is cold the next day, he grew more amazed. The mixture is so supple, waterproof, and airtight. When heated the rubber is no longer sticky, mushy, or change shape. Goodyear has been discovered by chance vulcanization. Vulcanization comes from Vulkan is the god of fire in the religion of the Romans. It was originally named Goodyear rubber snaking fire-resistant rubber.Goodyear discovered vulcanization in 1839. But because of the vulcanization process is so simple, then the discovery of Goodyear much imitated and used by others. goodyear so much debt to friends and acquaintances, financially, goodyear loss and debt, finance the development of experiments and discoveries. Five years later (1844) he received the patent. But the final victory he had just acquired. In 1851 an international exhibition held in London. On display is a rubber chair, desk rubber, rubber rugs, books made of rubber, rubber jewelry, and so forth.later (1855) to hold a similar exhibition in Paris. Even in France, he established a vulcanized rubber factory. The factory was closed down. Goodyear was arrested and thrown into prison because they could not repay its debts.Once out of prison he returned to the United States. Here he borrows money to set up a factory that vulcanized rubber. He expects it will have a big advantage if the production plant sells. But the hijackers also set up a factory race rivals who produce similar goods.Other people who take advantage of his discovery of abundant benefit. Before you can enjoy the fruits of his invention, Goodyear died. and died in New York City on July 1, 1860 at the age of 60 years in very poor condition and even involved a huge debt.GOODYEAR name still continues to be used by the largest rubber company in the U.S..
